FLNG - A new dawn? - Part 1

(Originally published on September 4, 2023)

Back in 2007, I attended the LNG 15 conference in Barcelona. At that time, it seemed like every company was promoting some form of FLNG project. However, this was probably the "peak of inflated expectations" and the majority of these projects failed to materialise as alternative sources of gas and LNG (predominantly from the US) entered the market. However, the current global political situation and the corresponding impact this has had on global gas markets, together with a desire to reduce emissions and use natural gas as a transition fuel, has seen a resurgence of interest in FLNG as a solution.

The potential for new FLNG projects will doubtless be one of the topics of interest at this week's Gastech in Singapore. In parts 2 and 3, I will take a look at the potential for FLNG to be deployed in Asia-Pacific but, before getting into that, it will be good to understand where the market is today by reviewing the existing and ordered FLNG units as well as some of those closest to being sanctioned.
